I am celebrating! Yesterday was the 31st anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act! Twenty years ago, I wouldn’t have cared at all. But today, my heart is full of gratefulness for this life-changing piece of legislation. I am a disabled American who greatly depends on the fruits of this law. Thanks to the ADA, today I am assured the confidence to roll instead of walk into many places of business and worship, without the fear that it will be inaccessible to my walker or wheelchair. Thanks to the ADA, I can depend on movie theaters providing close captioning if I need it. Thanks to the ADA, I have rights as a disabled person, rights that are actually enforceable in a court of law. Thanks to the ADA, I feel a modicum of respect in a world that doesn’t always accommodate my disabilities. Today, I celebrate the 31st anniversary of the ADA, with pride and thanksgiving. Here’s to you, ADA!
